What are the thermoplastic elastomers?

Thermoplastic elastomers (TPE) are the class of polymer materials combining the highly elastic properties of rubbers and ease of the plastics processing. This feature allows to use TPE for the production of various products using the methods of extrusion, injection molding, vacuum molding, blowing, pressing, etc., and admits the possibility of production wastes recycling excluding the loss of the initial properties of TPE as well.

Different TPE types

There exist different types of thermoplastic elastomeric materials: TPE-S, TPE-O, TPE-U, TPE-E. The most commonly used of these is a general-purpose TPE-S based on styrene block copolymers (SEBS, SBS, SIS, SEPS).

Based on SEBS, TPE-S provides a wide range of operating temperatures, resistance to atmospheric influences and ozone and ultraviolet radiation from the sun. It is allowed to be used in medical devices and goods which are in contact with food.

Based on SBS, TPE-S has excellent low temperature resistance, increased elasticity, adhesion, but is less resistant to UV and ozone.

Based on SIS, TPE-S is more frequently used to produce adhesive compounds and compounds with the reduced gas permeability.

Scope of application

TPE is widely used in various industries meeting specialized requirements. They are used not only in the interior details of cars but for the production of seals, tubes, dusters, various gaskets in the exterior as well. TPE is used in electrical engineering for the manufacture of tools handles and cable entries as an example. The consumer products such as toys, sports equipment, packaging, and hygiene items, like toothbrushes and razors, are made of TPE. Special TPE grades, that meet strict medical tolerances and are more cost-efficient materials than PVC plastics and rubbers, have been developed for medical applications. These applications include drip chambers, seals, medical tubes, flexible packaging.

STANDARD PROF offers a wide specialized range of TPE grades for various applications and technologies of processing into products.
